Janet Adams
CPA, CA Owner
Janet grew up on a family grain farm near Kindersley, Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Saskatchewan where she obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree and met her husband, Barry. They moved to Medicine Hat, where Barry was involved in the family mixed-farm operation. Janet then began her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) career.
After articling and becoming a partner at the first CPA firm she worked at, Janet joined Burns, Valkenburg & Associates LLP (BVA) in 2003. She was a partner with BVA from 2007 to 2019. While at both firms, Janet assisted owner-managed businesses and not-for-profit agencies in reaching their financial goals. She is grateful for the opportunity to be in public accounting in Vermilion and Medicine Hat.
A sampling of the for-profit industries she has worked extensively with includes farming, professionals, construction, trucking, oil and gas servicing, retail, commercial and residential rental, investment or holding companies, and trusts. Not-for-profit industries include condominiums, extended care homes, health-related agencies, tourism, and community enhancement agencies.
Janet has presented at several seminars on succession planning and business reorganization. She has guided clients through their own tailor-made succession plans or corporate reorganizations and is looking forward to applying her years of experience in performing review and notice to reader engagements and preparing corporate, personal, and trust income tax returns to assist residents of Vermilion, Medicine Hat, and their surrounding districts.
Janet and Barry have two married children who live in the US and Calgary. When she isn’t working, Janet enjoys yoga, walking, and watching local hockey. Barry and Janet have had season tickets to the Medicine Hat Tigers for over 30 years.
Patricia Hanson
CPA, CGA Manager
Patricia is a fourth-generation rancher with a passion for helping clients establish and expand their businesses. She owns a cow/calf operation with her husband near Vermilion, Alberta where they raise their three children.
Since 2007 Patricia has worked in public practice helping clients, develop solutions to complex business challenges. Her background in the agricultural industry has provided her with experience and knowledge to manage farm programs and tax solutions for agricultural producers. She also has experience working with oil and gas industry-based clients and family members who are involved in various segments of the oil and gas industry.
She is passionate about finding solutions for the intergenerational transfer of your business.
As an amputee and parent, she understands the complexity of navigating government assistance programs and uses her experiences to help clients get the financial and medical support they need.
In the past, she was involved in rodeo, primarily as a breakaway roper, and was the 2007 Cowgirl of the Year in the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Her current hobbies are riding horses and purchasing cattle.
Taylor Rattai
CPA, CA Manager
Taylor was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Her Mother was a bookkeeper and taught Taylor bookkeeping at a young age so when she finished high school, she knew she wanted to be an accountant. She started her Bachelor of Commerce at Medicine Hat College, then transferred to the University of Calgary to complete her degree.
After university, Taylor started public accounting at Burns, Valkenburg, and Associates, where she completed the program for her CPA designation. She’s been an active member of CPA Alberta since 2018.
After 5 years in public accounting, she worked a six-month stint in industry for a construction company that builds ready-to-move homes and other buildings. She was excited to work with Janet again when offered a position at JMH Adams Professional Corporation.
In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her German Shepherds, Major and Oakley, and read.
Annette Young
Senior Accountant
Annette started her career in 1986 with the McMinis group as the Receptionist and Bookkeeper. The firm partners have changed over the years but the valued relationships with the clients have continued.
After her son was born in 2002, she returned to work in the Accounting Technician position preparing personal and corporate tax.
Her husband Blair is an Operator with Gear Energy, being located close by the family farm allows him to help her brother during harvest. Summers are spent at their Ministikwan Lake lot enjoying boating and quadding. Thanks to the Vermilion Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club the family is able to ride from their house down the Vermilion River meeting up with friends and clients around a fire.
Lori Fundytus Senior
Senior Accountant
Lori has been in public practice since 1994 when she started at the Firm. She married her husband Leonard and joined his family’s farm and cattle operation. They continue enjoying life on the farm, and spending time with her stepsons and especially her two grandchildren.
She looks forward to serving the future needs of her clients in all industries as a member of the J.M.H. Adams Professional Corporation team.
In her spare time, Lori volunteers at the local community hall, church, and cemetery societies. She loves to travel with her husband and meet new people.
Tammy Hartwell
Bookkeeper and Receptionist
Tammy has enjoyed her receptionist role for the past 11 years as she has the opportunity to converse with clients when they come through the door.
Although the conversations are usually work-related, she strives to get to know our clients on a personal level. She takes immense pleasure in supporting all clients in any way she can.
Emily Mathieu
Accountant
Emily is an accountant at J.M.H. Adams with aspirations of getting her CPA one day.
After initially pursuing a career in science, where she worked in a Lab researching glaucoma and dry macular degeneration in Toronto, Emily moved home to Alberta to be closer to her family and to start a new career in accounting. She enjoys working with numbers and engaging with clients whenever possible.
In her spare time Emily enjoys reading, investing, weightlifting, and cycling.
Barry Adams
Facility Manager
After over twenty years of being in the mixed farming business, Barry entered the real estate rental business. He currently manages several residential and commercial rental properties.
Barry enjoys watching junior hockey and assisting in goalie camps. He has also recently started purchasing broken items online and rebuilding them to give them a second life.
Janice Giles
Bookkeeper and Accounting Technician
Janice has focused on understanding client needs, recognizing potential value, and enhancing their bottom line for over 20 years.
She studied accounting through the CGA program at SAIT and has a Bachelor of Admin. in Accounting from the LCC and a Bachelor of Ed from the U of A majoring in mathematics. She has worked with/for industry experts since 2004 and has been involved in the CAIS and Agristability/Agriinvest programs since their onset.
Her son (born in 2005) is an apprentice welder. She has been exposed to the welding industry trades work, and oil and gas for over 20 years. She has farmed for most of her life and in 2003 purchased a purebred cattle farm. Janice takes pride in carefully listening to her client’s concerns and incorporating them into her client’s bottom line.

Our History
1975 – Brian G. McMinis Professional Corp was located at 4915 – 50 Avenue.
1977 Brian McMinis bought out Robert Alexander (when he moved to Lethbridge) and became partners with Donald Jones Chartered Accountant in the current location 5135 - 50 Avenue. The Firm's name was McMinis & Jones, Chartered Accountants.
In the early 1980’s Craig Stewart became a partner and the name changed to McMinis, Jones & Stewart Chartered Accountants. Then Giles Prefontaine and Alan McMinis joined the Firm and it had 5 partners and employed approximately 20 people.
In approximately 1989 Don Jones sold out and the name was changed to McMinis & Stewart Chartered Accountants. Giles Prefontaine sold his interest in 2002 and Craig Stewart left the partnership in 2004. Brian G. McMinis & Alan McMinis were the partners and the Firm’s name was changed to McMinis and Company Chartered Accountants.
In 2008 Brian McMinis passed away of lung cancer in a short period of time.
2010 Alan McMinis purchased the business from the estate and it became McMinis & Company Certified General Accountants .
In 2015 the CGAs were grandfathered into the CPA designation and the name was changed to McMinis & Company Chartered Professional Accountants. It continues out of its 5135 – 50 Avenue Vermilion location.
From 1976 until 2008 the firm offered various aspects of accounting: bookkeeping, payroll, T4’s, T5’s, non-review financial statements, review financial statements, audits, income tax assessments, income tax returns, tax planning, etc.
2010 until present the firm offers the same services except for review financial statements and audits.
2021 Janet Adams, CPA, CA purchases McMinis & Co changing the name to J.M.H. Adams Chartered Professional Accountants. They offer the level of service with the same team. Review and audit engagements have been added to the services offered.
